October 10, 2025 · At Manila Electric Company (Meralco)’s summit, “Horizons: One Meralco Long-term Sustainability Strategy Summit,” its leaders affirmed the organization’s commitment to transition to cleaner energy, BusinessMirror reported.
Meralco PowerGen (MGEN) President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio declared the organization’s ambition to spearhead the Philippines’ transition to renewable energy by 2027. “Our long-term commitment is to phase out coal by 2050,” he said. “But during this transition, coal remains necessary to bridge the gap—used responsibly and strategically—to guarantee that as we shift to cleaner sources, we do not sacrifice reliability and affordability along the way.”
Meralco Chief Sustainability Officer and Movem President and CEO Raymond B. Ravelo stressed that since nearly half of the Philippines’ greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the energy sector, the responsibility to drive significant change falls on One Meralco’s shoulders, the country’s biggest electric power supplier.
“We have made a deliberate choice: to place sustainable, life-giving action at the heart of everything we do. Not as a side initiative, not merely as a corporate obligation, but as a pledge to our people, to our planet, and to prosperity.”
